Measuring

Guide to taking measurements

It’s easier to have someone else take your measurements. But you can do this yourself in front of a mirror, in case you can’t find someone to help.

You will need a tailor’s measuring tape. In case you don’t have a measuring tape, use a piece of string and a scale.

For best results make the measurements without clothes on, or with a thin t-shirt with nothing underneath.

The measuring tape or string does not need to be pulled tight, but it does need to be snug and flat against your body. Make sure it is not loose or hanging.

When taking your measurements, hold the end of the tape measure that starts at number 1 at the front of your chest, over the tape that's been pulled around your body, and take note of the number on the tape that is closest to the end you're holding.

You will need to take 3 measurements: Full chest, under chest and shoulders.

Full Chest

Wrap a tape measure around the fullest part of your chest. This is the part that comes out farthest from your body.

The tape measure should be as straight and flat as possible, at both the front and the back.

The tape should not be pulled too tight.

Write down the measurement. You might want to measure more than once for accuracy.

Under chest

Wrap the tape below your chest, at the bra line (see photo).

The tape measure should be as straight and flat as possible, at both the front andthe back. It should not be pulled too tight.

Write down the measurement. You might want to measure more than once for accuracy.

Shoulders

Place one end of the tape at the outside edge of one shoulder. Measure across your body to the outside edge of your other shoulder.

Make sure you are standing up straight. Avoid tensing up, hunching your shoulders or wrapping the measuring tape around your shoulders.

Write down the measurement. You might want to measure more than once for accuracy.
